Departmental Laboratories for Testing and Consultancy Facilities
Fluid Mechanics and Hydraulic Machines Laboratory:-
In addition to academic purpose, the laboratory serves various testing and consultancy facilities like: pipe test, V-notch calibration, pump performance test, valve test, and consultancy for water transmission and supply etc.
Major Equipment:
1. Hydraulic pump and turbine test rig
2. Wind tunnel
3. Water hammer test rig
4. Jet centrifugal pump
5. Hydraulic bench for various fluid mechanics practical: 2 nos. etc.
The lab also caters to the central India's first NABL Accredited Pump & Motor Testing Lab, Centre of Pump Engineering (COPE), SGSITS Indore as the “Centre of Excellence in Rotating Machines”. It facilitates for the testing of solar-based pumps, Monoset pumps, Submersible pumps, Openwell pumps, and 3-phase induction motors as per IS standards and MNRE guidelines. The COPE has world-class infrastructure for the research, testing, and development of rotating machines. It is also recognized by the National Accreditation Board for Testing and Calibration Laboratories (NABL.) as per ISO/IEC 17025:2017
Infrastructure:
- In the campus of SGSITS Indore, COPE has dedicated area for testing and research facilities for pump and three-phase induction motors.
- Pump testing setup up to 30 HP, 4 inch size outlet at 50Hz
- Three-phase induction motor testing setup upto 30 HP at 50Hz.
- Solar Pump testing setup upto 10 HP as per MNRE guidelines as per IS-17429
- COPE uses high-class accuracy and precision instruments for testing of motors and pumps
- On the rooftop of laboratory solar PV panel mounting structure is available to facilitate real-time testing.
- It is also equipped with a solar array PV simulator of 15 KW from AMETEK.

CAD-Project Lab:-
The lab undertake various research modeling, analysis project of field interest.
The lab possesses following equipment:-
- Stratasys FDM Creform rapid prototyping system
- Handyscan 3d scanner
- BenQ CAD modeling system
- Software- ANSYS15.0, Unigraphics, HyperMesh AutoCAD, IDeaS
Material Testing Laboratory:-
Material testing laboratory is one of the oldest laboratories in the department. The laboratory is engaged in conducting experiments at both UG and PG level. The laboratory is also used for outside testing jobs. It has facilities for tensile test, torsion test, bend test, hardness test etc. The laboratory also provides consultancy services in the related areas.
Equipment : It is equipped with various material testing machines e.g. universal testing machine (50 tons), universal testing machine (10 tons), impact testing machine (charpy and izod), torsion testing machine, transverse testing machine , hardness testing machine (brinell, vickers and rockwell) etc.
Vibration & Noise Control Laboratory:-
Facilities in the area of vibration testing, modal testing, and natural frequency test, FFT Analysis, Rotor balancing, critical speed test, sound measurement etc. are available.
Equipment available:-
- OROS four channel vibration Analyzer
- NI based vibration measurement hardware and software system
- Accelerometers and proximity probes for vibration measurement
- Instrumented hammer (Impact hammer)
- Balancing Machine (50 kg)
- Sound level meter
- Machinery fault simulator
- Two and four channel oscilloscopes
Material Science and Mechanical Metallurgy Laboratory:-
In addition to UG and PG level experimental setups, the laboratory is well equipped to serve testing for outside industry/academia. It has equipment for testing various materials, including microhardness of the surface, investigations of microstructures, determination of carbon percentage in material and characterising of surface roughness, and non-destructive testing like ultrasonic testing, magnetic particle inspection test, Die-penetration test. In relevant fields, the laboratory also offers consulting services.
